Inspirational Designers - Edith Head

For over 40 years, Edith Head worked as a costume designer in Hollywood. With 35 Academy Award nominations, she is the only woman in history to win 8 Oscars.

Despite having no formal training in costume design, Edith Head started working on silent films in 1925 and later, moving from Paramount to Universal, she worked extensively with Alfred Hitchcock styling the unforgettable look of Kim Novak in Vertigo

and Tippi Hedren in The Birds

and Marnie.

Responsible for creating some of the most famous fashion images of her day, Edith Head went on to write books on fashion and became the favourite designer of many leading ladies such as Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor.

What a costume designer does is a cross between magic and camouflage. We create the illusion of changing the actors into what they are not. We ask the public to believe that every time they see a performer on the screen he's become a different person -Edith Head
