Does Cycling In A Skirt Make You A Motoring Hazard?

Jasmijn Rijcken was stopped and almost ticketed by an NYPD officer for biking in this outfit. Her skirt, the officer said, was too distracting for drivers.

Would You Trust An Airbag Helmet?

Bike jousting? Naked rides? There's a cycling niche for everyone.

Rain, Cycling and Glasses: they don't mix
Beer and bikes: can they ever mix?
What was the first bike you really loved?
What to do if your bike is stolen?

And how to make cycling more fun: turn your bike into a horse

Just some of the many questions, views and advice found on the Guardian bike blog and the new Bloggers on Biking book CycleBabble.

  1. Thank you Lois this Guardian blog bike is wonderful, the post Does cycling in a skirt make you a motoring hazard? makes me furious and feminist and then laughing.

  2. Totally agree, Lucie! The author of the post "Does cycling in a skirt...?", Dawn Foster, blogs at

where she 'catalogues the insults and comments' shouted at her whilst riding her bike. And I think you can submit your own!

  3. Oops, didn't mean submit your own 'insults and comments' but rather you can submit the 'insults and comments' shouted at you! Anyway, it is great read.

...still a bit early for me. Need another cup of coffee...

  4. Lois this post is hilarious!
Except for the NYPD stopping this Jasmijn Reijcken (was this New York, she must be Dutch?) Anyway it is about time for another feminist wave… In Italy some police officer too made a statement in public about women must not be aloud to wear such short skirts. Seems to me we are going back in time…

  5. agree with all of the above... and Portland has a naked bike ride every year too.
